Weather Update: Record-Breaking Heat as Summer Ends

As we approach the end of meteorological summer, Sacramento braces for a cooling period ahead—albeit a temporary reprieve from the record-breaking heat that has characterized the season.

What’s Meteorological Summer?

Weather experts call June 1st to August 31st “meteorological summer.” It’s usually the hottest time of the year.

This helps them compare weather from year to year. This summer in Sacramento has been hotter than ever before.

Sacramento’s Hottest Summer Yet

Sacramento has had some really hot summers lately. Before this year, 2020 was the hottest, with an average temperature just under 80 degrees.

But 2023 beat that record.

The average temperature this summer was 80.3 degrees, making it the hottest ever.

Why Was It So Hot?

The soaring temperatures have largely been driven by an exceptionally sweltering July, which saw over 20 days with temperatures soaring into the triple digits.

This extreme heat was instrumental in pushing the average temperature for the summer months to unprecedented levels.

What’s Coming in September?

It will cool down a bit at the start of September. August 31st will still be hot, around 100 degrees. But on September 1st and 2nd, it will be cooler because of colder air coming from the north.

But the cooler weather won’t last long. Starting next Tuesday, it might get even hotter than it was this week. Nights might stay warm too.
