Southern California Braces for Heat Wave in the Last Week of August 2024
Southern California is set to experience a mix of warm and cool temperatures this week, with varying conditions across different regions.
Early Week Heat-Up
As we enter the week, significant changes are expected across the valley and beach areas. Starting Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will climb into the mid-90s in the valleys. This trend will peak midweek before gradually cooling off to the low 90s by week’s end.
Meanwhile, beach regions like Long Beach enjoyed a beautiful sunrise this morning before basking in blue sunny skies throughout the afternoon. Long Beach saw cooler temperatures, around 76°F, with a gentle breeze at 14 mph. The Blue Ridge area experienced a hazy yet stunning sunset with temperatures in the low 80s.

Midweek Cooling
Despite the weekend warmth, a cooling trend is on the horizon. However, this respite will be brief. The trough of low pressure that kept the temperatures mild over the weekend is moving eastwards, making way for a high-pressure system.
This system is expected to intensify on Monday and Tuesday, pushing Los Angeles temperatures up to 86°F. Following this peak, the ridge of high pressure will weaken, leading to a slight cool down by Thursday and Friday.
Regional Forecasts
- Dana Point: 78°F
- Mission Viejo: 85°F
- Riverside, Covina, Ontario: Mid-90s
- Glendale: Just shy of 90°F
- Thousand Oaks: 88°F
- Oxnard and Ventura: Mid to upper 70s, cool and cloudy
For most of Los Angeles and Orange County, early-week temperatures are expected to hover around 86°F before cooling slightly towards the weekend.
Coastal and Inland Conditions
Coastal regions will experience pleasant conditions, starting in the mid-70s and cooling to the low 70s. Surf conditions will range from 1 to 3 feet. Inland areas like the Valleys and Inland Empire will see temperatures in the mid-90s early in the week, cooling slightly by Wednesday, then warming up again next weekend.

Mountain and Desert Forecast
Mountains will stay in the mid-70s, warming to upper 70s by midweek. Thunderstorms are possible on Thursday and Friday due to monsoonal moisture.
The desert areas, including Palm Springs, will face triple-digit temperatures all week long. Thunderstorm potential extends to the desert regions as well, particularly towards the latter part of the week.
