SoCal Triple-Digit Heat Wave to Stay Before Cooldown Arrives

Residents across the valley are bracing for continued triple-digit heat, but relief is on the horizon with a cooling trend expected next week. A heat advisory remains in effect through Friday night.

Temperatures are projected to reach up to 108°F in some areas, with most spots settling between 100°F to 105°F.

Heat Advisory Details

The heat warning lasts until 8 p.m. Friday, covering areas from the valley to the Grapevine and into Southern California. This extreme heat is risky, especially with Friday night football games starting when it’s still 97°F outside.

Wind and Fire Risks

There’s also a higher chance of fires, especially in high areas and foothills on Friday and Saturday. Winds are expected to pick up, which could help fires spread. There’s a small chance (10% to 15%) of thunderstorms, which could start fires if lightning hits dry areas.

“The fire risk is serious,” Gomez said. “Lightning in dry areas is especially dangerous.”

Weekend Weather Outlook

The weekend will bring slight relief with temperatures in the mid to low 90s.

By Monday, temperatures will further drop to around 95°F, with the possibility of 80s returning by Tuesday. Wind gusts will play a crucial role in fire spread, with 15 to 20 mph gusts expected on Friday evening and stronger gusts of up to 45 mph in the Yosemite area on Saturday.

“A trough beginning to enter the area from Saturday to Sunday will contribute to the cooling trend, dropping temperatures into the lower 90s by Sunday,” Gomez explained.

Potential for Showers

Next week may also see a slight chance of showers, as a low-pressure system could bring some much-needed precipitation to the area. However, this also raises the potential for thunderstorms, especially in foothill regions.

Looking Ahead

By the end of next week and into the following weekend, clearer skies and cooler temperatures in the 80s are anticipated. For those planning to visit the Bay Area, expect milder conditions with temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s in Oakland, while inland areas like Rio Vista and Vacaville could still experience temperatures over 100°F.

In summary, while the immediate forecast calls for high temperatures and fire risks, a significant cooling trend and potential rain could bring relief next week. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing weather pattern.
