Debate Over San Francisco’s Great Highway Heats Up as November Ballot Looms

San Francisco residents are deeply divided over the future of the Great Highway. In November, voters will decide whether to turn part of this well-known road into a park. On Saturday, people on both sides of the issue took to the streets to share their views.

What’s on the Ballot?

Proposition K asks voters if they want to close a two-mile stretch of the Great Highway between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way. The plan is to turn this area into a park by the ocean. Part of the road is already closing due to beach erosion, making this vote even more important.

Support for the Park Plan

Many people back the idea of creating a new park. During the pandemic, the road was closed to cars on weekends and holidays, and it became a popular spot for walking and biking. Supporters say the change could bring new life to the Sunset District, help local businesses, and be good for the environment.

“We really got to know the coast and the Sunset in a new way when we could walk and stroll there,” said one supporter.

Those Against the Closure

Not everyone likes the idea of closing the road. Some say there’s already enough space for people to walk and bike along the sides of the highway. They worry that closing the road will cause more traffic on nearby streets, which could be dangerous for kids and families.

“It’s not safe to have all that extra traffic on residential streets where kids are playing,” one opponent argued.

What the City Says

City officials have looked into the traffic issue. They say that nearby Sunset Boulevard, which has six lanes, can handle any extra cars. They don’t think traffic will be a big problem.

The Final Decision

Both sides feel strongly about their views. In the end, San Francisco voters will make the choice in November. Their decision will shape the future of the Great Highway and how people use the city’s coastline.”
